The Atlanta Braves have secured right-hander Joel Payamps by agreeing to a one-year, $2.25 million contract. This move, announced on Monday, continues the team’s strategy of retaining experienced players in their bullpen. Payamps, who joined the Braves late last season after being claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers, brings valuable experience to the roster.
During his brief stint with Atlanta, the 31-year-old pitcher made a notable impact, allowing just one run in 2 2/3 innings. Overall, he finished the season with a 6.84 ERA across 30 games. In his seven seasons in the Major Leagues, Payamps has demonstrated consistent performance with a career ERA of 3.41 and has recorded 10 saves. His best season came in 2024, when he achieved a career-high of six saves while playing for the Brewers.
Braves Offseason Activity
The agreement with Payamps marks the second significant move by the Braves in a week aimed at preserving veteran talent in their bullpen. On Wednesday, the team re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias to a one-year deal valued at $16 million. The Braves are clearly focused on maintaining a robust pitching lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In addition to retaining Iglesias, Atlanta has also been active in the trade market. On the same day they announced Iglesias’s re-signing, the Braves acquired Mauricio Dubón from the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder Nick Allen. These moves indicate a proactive approach by the Braves as they look to strengthen their roster ahead of the new season.
As the offseason progresses, the Braves are expected to continue making strategic decisions to enhance their competitiveness. With the retention of experienced players like Payamps and Iglesias, Atlanta aims to solidify its position as a strong contender in the league.
