Beloved San Pedro Resident John “Jack” Brown Passes Away at 92

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, in San Pedro, California, surrounded by his loving family. His life was marked by a deep connection to his community, a passion for family, and a commitment to his work and personal interests.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack’s childhood was filled with fond memories of San Pedro. He enjoyed catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. One of his first jobs was at Helen Grace Chocolates. During World War II, he spent time with his father, who served as a Civilian Air Warden, contributing to the war effort in his own small way.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would take a ferry across the harbor to reach school. A talented athlete, Jack excelled in sports, particularly as a distance runner on the Track and Field team, earning numerous accolades during his high school years. He continued his athletic pursuits in college while studying Drafting, eventually leading to a successful career at Northrop Grumman.

Career and Personal Life

Following his tenure at Northrop Grumman, Jack ventured into entrepreneurship, starting his own business and employing friends and colleagues he met throughout his career. In 1969, he met Rita Cebula, the love of his life, and they were married on April 17, 1971. Together, they welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975.

The couple was deeply involved in their community and church, with Rita dedicating 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity. Jack shared a passion for family vacations, gardening, and various hobbies including sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting. Known for his unique sense of humor, he brought joy to those around him, often starting each day with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and an avid interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He also leaves behind his sister Agnes Welsh and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park. Friends and family are encouraged to sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com to honor Jack’s memory.
