Beloved Educator Kathleen Ann Giacalone Passes Away at 88

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a cherished elementary school teacher and devoted family member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Her life journey began on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, where she was born to Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later made her home in Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone.

For nearly four decades, Kathleen dedicated her career to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. Following her retirement, she embraced a passion for travel, exploring new places and cultures.

Family and Legacy

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack, and their two children: daughter ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek and son Paul (Kelly) Giacalone. She was also a proud grandmother to four grandchildren, Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna. Additionally, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply.

In honoring her memory, the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kathleen’s name to several organizations that were close to her heart, including Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild.

Funeral Arrangements

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Kathleen’s life will take place on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering the life of a remarkable woman whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.
