Montcalm County Election Commission Appoints New Officials for Belvidere Township

In a decisive move to stabilize the Belvidere Township Board, the Montcalm County Election Commission appointed Sheila Smith and Nancy Snyder as temporary clerk and treasurer, respectively, on October 27, 2023. This action follows a series of resignations that left the board without a quorum, hampering its operations.

The Election Commission, comprised of Montcalm County Clerk Kristen Millard, Treasurer JoAnne Vukin, and Probate Court Judge Charles Simon III, convened at the request of Wayne Watts, one of the two remaining trustees on the board. Following multiple resignations—including that of Tim Anstett just weeks into his role as clerk—the board’s ability to conduct essential business was severely compromised.

History of Instability

Belvidere Township has experienced significant turnover in leadership over the past three years, cycling through four supervisors, seven clerks, two treasurers, and four trustees. The recent resignations of Leigh Murray as supervisor and Yolanda Lane as treasurer have further contributed to this instability.

In her nearly 30 years as county clerk, Millard noted that such a unique appointment was unprecedented. She expressed her commitment to restoring functionality to the board, stating, “We need to ensure that the township can effectively serve its residents.” The Election Commission unanimously voted 3-0 to appoint Smith and Snyder, marking a critical step toward re-establishing governance in the township.

Experienced Leadership Appointed

Sheila Smith brings extensive experience to the role of temporary clerk, having served nearly 30 years in the same position before her resignation in early 2023. Since then, she has taken on the role of early voting chairperson for Montcalm County. Her familiarity with township operations may prove invaluable as the board seeks to regain its footing.

Nancy Snyder also holds significant experience, having previously served as Belvidere Township treasurer for nine years and as deputy treasurer. More recently, she has assisted in election preparations and early voting initiatives for the county, demonstrating her commitment to public service.

After their appointments, both women expressed optimism for the future. Smith stated, “We’re not going to dwell on the past, we’re going to focus on the future.” Snyder echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the importance of moving forward.

The Belvidere Township Board is scheduled to convene on October 31, 2023, at 18:00 hours. The appointments of Smith and Snyder are currently temporary, and the board will have the opportunity to either retain them or consider other candidates once it regains a full quorum.

This transition marks a pivotal moment for Belvidere Township, as it strives to overcome recent challenges and work towards effective governance.
