On Saturday, millions of Americans participated in the No Kings rallies held across all 50 states, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy. In Colorado’s House District 26, Representative Meghan Lukens joined constituents at gatherings in Edwards and Steamboat Springs, reinforcing the message that civic engagement is crucial for accountability and democratic values. “We show up because we love this country, and because we love it, we hold it accountable to live up to its highest ideals,” said Lukens.
Support for Healthy School Meals and Local Economy
As Election Day approaches on November 4, 2024, attention turns to two key propositions that aim to enhance the welfare of children in Colorado. Proposition LL and Proposition MM seek to continue the successful Healthy School Meals for All program. These initiatives address food insecurity, which affects two out of five families in Colorado. Many children rely on school meals as their primary source of nutrition.
By voting “yes” on these propositions, Colorado voters can ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals, ultimately leading to improved academic performance and graduation rates. Additionally, the propositions will bolster the local economy by encouraging schools to source fresh ingredients from local farmers and ranchers. They also provide resources for training school staff in meal preparation and improving compensation for food service workers.
Strengthening Voting Rights in Colorado
In a climate where voter access is increasingly under threat, Colorado has taken steps to secure voting rights through legislation. SB25-001 locks in strong voting protections at the state level, ensuring that even if federal protections falter, Colorado will maintain safeguards against discrimination at the ballot box. This legislation addresses the needs of communities that historically face voting barriers.
Further, HB25-1225 aims to reduce voter intimidation by protecting voters, poll workers, and election judges from threats and harassment. “In Colorado, intimidating voters or election workers won’t be tolerated,” Lukens stated, highlighting the state’s commitment to a fair electoral process.
Promoting Access to Information and Equal Rights
Lukens, who has a background in education, emphasizes the necessity of an informed electorate. To combat the increasing trend of book bans across the nation, SB25-063 was enacted to protect school libraries. This law mandates that school boards develop clear policies for book selection and challenges, allowing students access to diverse and age-appropriate literature.
Additionally, Colorado has enhanced its anti-discrimination laws through HB25-1239, which particularly benefits individuals with disabilities. Following the passage of Amendment J, which removed outdated discriminatory language regarding marriage from the state constitution, SB25-014 updated state law to reflect this change, ensuring that all citizens are treated fairly.
Another significant development is SB25-196, which protects access to essential preventive health care. This law ensures that even if federal regulations are weakened, Colorado residents will retain access to necessary health services, including cancer screenings and vaccinations.
Engaging the Community Ahead of Election Day
The recent rallies reflect a strong public commitment to democracy, with Lukens urging constituents to engage in the electoral process. “Vote in every election — not just presidential years,” she advised, stressing the importance of participation. Voters are reminded to submit their ballots by 19:00 on November 4, 2024.
To further promote civic involvement, Lukens encourages community dialogue about the importance of voting and invites constituents to consider volunteering as election judges. Students in high school can also participate in the Student Election Judges Program, fostering a sense of responsibility and engagement in the democratic process.
“Voting isn’t just a right. It’s how we protect all our rights,” Lukens added. As Election Day draws near, she reflects on her commitment to democracy, reminding constituents that it only thrives when citizens actively choose to defend it.
