Former Duncanville City Manager Dan D. Dodson Passes Away at 77

Dan D. Dodson, a respected figure in municipal management, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the age of 77 in Austin, Texas. His career spanned over three decades, during which he served as City Manager in multiple Texas cities, including Flower Mound, Duncanville, and Jonestown, and held the position of Deputy Director at the Texas Water Development Board. Dodson was known for his expertise in municipal water rights and demonstrated a strong commitment to public service throughout his professional journey.

Born and raised in Richland Hills, Texas, Dodson attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he began to forge his path in public service. His leadership qualities earned him respect and admiration among peers and colleagues, and he was affectionately known as “The Captain.” He fostered a unique bond with family and friends, often referring to them as “The 5th District” and assigning naval ranks to strengthen their camaraderie.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dodson was passionate about boating on Lake Travis. He was known for hosting lively gatherings, including “Captain Dan’s Tailgate Extravaganza” and “Captain Dan’s Bar and Bistro,” where he shared his love for entertaining with family and friends. These events were characterized by Dodson’s generous spirit, humor, and engaging storytelling, often enjoyed alongside his favorite drinks, including Miller Lite, Tommy Bloody, and Richie Margarita.

Beyond his professional life, Dodson was an avid student of military history, particularly Vietnam and World War II. He enjoyed attending gun shows and maintained a personal collection. Above all, his family held a special place in his heart. Dodson was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Laurie F. Dodson, with whom he shared a profound partnership for 35 years. Their journey began at Duncanville City Hall, where they worked side by side before marrying in 1991.

Dodson is also survived by his brother, David Dodson; his son, Andrew Dodson; stepchildren Richard and Laurence Lane; and grandchildren Drew, Sam, Raegan, Haiden, and Fisher. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, cherished by those who knew him.
