California Declares Diwali a State Holiday Effective 2026

A new state holiday will be introduced in California, providing a significant cultural recognition for Indian Americans. Starting in 2026, the popular festival of Diwali will be officially observed as a state holiday, allowing many residents to celebrate this important occasion with their families. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law on October 5, 2023, making California the third state in the United States to recognize Diwali as a state holiday, alongside Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, will be celebrated on November 8, 2026, which falls on a Sunday. Consequently, the holiday will be observed on the following day, November 9. The festival represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It is celebrated by various religious communities, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists.

California is home to approximately 960,000 Indian Americans, accounting for about 20% of the Indian American population in the United States. The state’s recognition of Diwali highlights its commitment to celebrating the diverse cultural tapestry of its residents. The law enables public schools and community colleges to close for the holiday, and state employees are permitted to take the day off.

In response to the new holiday, Governor Newsom expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Happy Diwali, California. Today we celebrate the Festival of Lights — the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Wishing all who celebrate a year filled with peace and unity.”

The significance of Diwali has also been acknowledged by political leaders beyond California. Former President Donald Trump conveyed his best wishes during the festival last year, underscoring its importance in American culture. He remarked, “For many Americans, Diwali is a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness.” Trump emphasized the festival’s role in fostering community and hope, stating, “As millions of citizens light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil.”

The Bay Area is renowned for hosting the largest Diwali celebrations in North America. Major events take place annually at locations such as the County Fairgrounds in Alameda and Memorial Park in Cupertino. These festivals feature traditional Indian music, dance performances, food stalls, and vibrant firework displays, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of community.

As California prepares to recognize Diwali as a state holiday, it reflects a broader movement toward inclusivity and cultural appreciation. The addition of Diwali to the state holiday calendar allows for greater acknowledgment of the contributions of Indian Americans and the rich cultural traditions they bring to the state.
