WDAY’s Kevin Wallevand Receives Quilt After Emmy Win

On November 7, 1997, WDAY-TV reporter Kevin Wallevand and photographer Chad Pederson achieved a significant milestone when their documentary, “The Quilt: Hope from the Heartland,” earned the first Emmy awarded to a television station in North Dakota. The half-hour program showcased a quilt crafted by the women of North Buffalo Church in Kragnes, Minnesota, and followed its journey to a village in Angola.

The Emmy recognition was a proud moment for WDAY, but an event that followed at North Buffalo Church proved to be even more meaningful for Wallevand and Pederson. The church invited them to a service, anticipating a simple reunion with the women who contributed to the documentary. Instead, they experienced a heartfelt celebration of their work.

The church was adorned with welcoming signs, acknowledging the Emmy win. During the service, the Rev. Larry Vigen incorporated the quilt’s story into his sermon, highlighting the impact of community efforts in changing lives.

About 15 quilters from the church came forward, presenting Wallevand and Pederson with gifts, including a quilt for each of them. Wallevand received a replica of the quilt featured in the documentary. Although the moment was emotionally charged, Wallevand struggled to express his gratitude, stating, “As neat as it was professionally to get that Emmy, it was a lot more rewarding to me personally to get that quilt. It was a neat day. They are a neat group.”

The significance of the quilt extends beyond personal acknowledgment; it serves as a symbol of comfort for someone in Angola. The emotional resonance of that day continues to stay with both Wallevand and Pederson, as they reflect on the warmth and community spirit represented by the quilt and the women behind it.

In a world where media often faces criticism, this story stands out, illustrating the profound connections that can be forged through shared efforts and creativity. The quilt embodies not only artistic expression but also the heartfelt commitment of the North Buffalo Church community, reinforcing the idea that local stories can have a far-reaching impact.
