St. Joseph Community Mourns the Loss of Michael Guthals

Michael Guthals, a beloved member of the St. Joseph community, passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 76. Surrounded by family, Guthals left behind a legacy of dedication and love that touched many lives.

Born in Clovis, New Mexico, Guthals graduated from Central High School in 1967 and went on to earn his degree from Missouri Western State College in 1971. His professional life was marked by over 25 years of service with the Department of Family Services, where he made significant contributions to the community.

Guthals was known for his deep commitment to his family and his faith. He found strength and guidance in his church and cherished the time spent with loved ones. His interests included hunting and fishing, activities that brought him joy and relaxation.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Guthals; his brother, Doug (Katie) Guthals; his sister, Jody Creighton; and four children: Derek Guthals, Karla Walters (Ed), David Smith (Kim), and Amy Stafford. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Guthals was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Doris Guthals; his brother, Daryl Guthals; lifelong friend, Mike Datillo; and his loyal dog, Trixie Girl.

A celebration of his life is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Clair United Methodist Church. Following the service, a lunch will be provided for those wishing to gather and honor Guthals’ journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Voices of Courage, an organization dedicated to supporting families in need.
