Ruth C. Magnuson, a cherished resident of Portland, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 94. Surrounded by her loving family, Ruth’s remarkable life came to a close, leaving behind a legacy of love, community, and service.
Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, Ruth was the daughter of George J. W. and Ina S. Kenney. She completed her education at Arlington High School in 1948. In 1953, she married the Rev. Robert H. Magnuson, and their journey together took them through various Lutheran congregations across the United States, including stints in Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts before finally settling in Portland.
Ruth’s early years were filled with adventurous spirit; she fondly remembered roller skating down the steep dirt roads of her childhood. A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, she engaged in spirited conversations about baseball, showcasing her passion for the sport.
Professionally, Ruth dedicated over 30 years of her career to Campbell, Payson and Noyes/Commercial Union Insurance. Her community spirit shone through in her numerous engagements, including her involvement in the church sewing group and her role as a Girl Scout cookie mother. Additionally, she served as a long-term election official, contributing to her community in various meaningful ways.
Her family describes Ruth as a person who was not only humorous and curious but also a prolific correspondent, often communicating with friends and family through letters. She held a fierce devotion to her family and enjoyed the companionship of numerous friends and beloved pets.
Ruth is survived by her children: Karen M. Fitzgerald of Westbrook, Robert E. Magnuson of South Portland, Cynthia R. Magnuson of Portland, and Christopher S. Magnuson (Jana R.) also of Portland. She leaves behind two grandchildren, Kathryn F. Gaudet (Devon) of Erving, Massachusetts, and Caroline F. Johnson (Tyler) of Cumberland, along with five great-grandchildren: Philip R. Gaudet, Joseph W. Gaudet, Zachary R. Johnson, and twins Allison C. Johnson and Abigail S. Johnson.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents and former husband, as well as her siblings: John, Virginia, George Jr., and Robert Kenney, and her son-in-law, Edouard G. DuPlessis.
A time of visitation for friends and family will take place on December 3 from 16:00 to 19:00 at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, located at 199 Woodford Street in Portland. Following this, a private interment will be held.
