Restored 21st Michigan Regiment Flag Unveiled in Ionia Ceremony

In a significant tribute to history, the fully restored battle flag of the 21st Michigan Regiment will be unveiled at the Ionia Armory on April 6, 2024, at 1 p.m. The ceremony is hosted by VFW Post 12082 of Ionia and VFW Post 4646 of Muir/Lyons, marking a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made by soldiers who fought under this banner during the American Civil War.

The flag, which has served as a symbol of courage and community pride for over 159 years, was meticulously restored in North Carolina after being removed from its display in the Ionia County Courthouse in April 2024. Crafted by the “Ladies of Ionia,” who were mothers of the soldiers, it stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of those who served.

Community Collaboration and Historical Significance

According to Eric Calley, commander of VFW Post 4646, the restoration project transcends the mere preservation of a historic relic. “It’s about preserving the story of those who carried this flag into battle — honoring their sacrifice and ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations,” he stated.

The restoration process was a collaborative effort involving local historians, veterans, and community advocates, ensuring that this piece of Michigan history is preserved for future generations. Textile conservators specializing in Civil War artifacts played a crucial role in stabilizing and preserving the flag’s fragile fabric.

Shane Houghton, quartermaster of VFW Post 12082, emphasized the flag’s enduring significance, saying, “This flag embodies endurance, unity and the unwavering spirit of those who served. Its return to Ionia is a powerful reminder of the generations who defended our freedom and the community that continues to honor them.”
