The Preemie Project will cease its operations as an independent nonprofit in 2026, according to founder Mandy Booth. Financial pressures have led to this significant decision, prompting a merger with Wynter’s Haven, a new nonprofit established by Kristen Lewis. This organization focuses on providing medical equipment to families with children who have special needs in the Dothan, Alabama area.
Wynter’s Haven was inspired by Lewis’s personal experience with her daughter, Wynter, who had specific medical equipment needs. Lewis noted that families often face lengthy waiting periods for essential medical supplies. “It could be six months to a year before you could get a medical stroller or a gait trainer,” she stated. This delay can be particularly challenging for families already navigating the complexities of caring for children with special needs.
The aim of the merger is to streamline the distribution of medical equipment. Families in need often find themselves waiting for insurance approvals or unable to secure devices due to previous equipment received. By creating a consolidated effort, Wynter’s Haven can collect and redistribute donated medical equipment to those in need.
As part of its mission, Wynter’s Haven has begun the process of collecting and distributing medical supplies, although it will officially launch its operations in 2026. Lewis encourages families with unused medical equipment to consider donating these items, which can significantly impact other families facing similar challenges. “With everyone donating their stuff, we can give it to other families that are either waiting on insurance or simply cannot get it,” she emphasized.
The merger of The Preemie Project with Wynter’s Haven signifies a shift towards a more collaborative approach in addressing the equipment shortages faced by families. By leveraging community support and donations, the initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for children with special needs in the region.
Families interested in following Wynter’s Haven’s developments or contributing to its mission can find more information on its Facebook page. As the organization prepares for its official launch, it welcomes community involvement in both donations and spreading the word about its services.
