Northern Express Company Plans Expansion After Business Surge

On November 24, 1899, the Grand Forks Herald reported a significant development for the Great Northern Express Company, which nearly doubled its business in Grand Forks over the past year. This impressive growth has prompted the company to consider relocating its office next spring to better accommodate the increased demand for its services.

Business Growth Highlights

In a conversation with an employee from the Great Northern Express Company, it was revealed that the firm’s business in Grand Forks has shown a substantial increase since January. For example, receipts in July 1899 reached $7,168, compared to only $4,718 in July of the previous year. This remarkable rise demonstrates the healthy business conditions in the area.

The Grand Forks office has been recognized as one of the best on the Great Northern system, especially considering the city’s size. Despite the increase in business, the company has maintained the same number of delivery wagons, which has led to some service challenges during the busy summer months. To address these concerns, another wagon will be added in the spring, ensuring improved service for customers.

Plans for Relocation and Upgrades

The current lease for the Great Northern Express Company’s office next to the St. John’s block is set to expire in May. The company is exploring options for a new location that would enhance both space and customer experience. One potential site is a building owned by Captain Powers, which is situated next to Stanchfield’s clothing store on Third Street. If this location is chosen, it may also house a ticket and express office.

Relocating to a new office would allow the company to install new fixtures and amenities, creating one of the finest facilities on the line. The current quarters have faced criticism, particularly during the winter months, for being uncomfortable due to cold temperatures.

The anticipated move reflects the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demands of its customers and enhancing service quality. With the volume of business justifying these changes, the Great Northern Express Company is well-positioned for continued success in Grand Forks.
