LEOMINSTER — Longtime community leader and Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, Neddy Latimer, was honored on October 16, 2023, during a ceremony that named a newly established shelter in her honor. The Neddy Latimer House aims to provide support and hope for individuals and families seeking a fresh start.
The event was marked by a celebratory atmosphere, with attendees expressing their admiration for Latimer’s unwavering commitment to the community. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, emphasized the significance of the shelter, stating, “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope.” He acknowledged Latimer’s dedication to serving those in need, underscoring her role in initiating the project that culminated in the shelter’s opening.
Bushman also noted the collaborative efforts that brought the shelter to fruition. “We invested over $3 million to make this an attractive place,” he said, highlighting the challenges faced during the renovation process. The shelter, located in downtown Leominster, is designed to offer a welcoming environment for families and individuals who require assistance.
Community Tribute and Acknowledgments
The ceremony included heartfelt remarks from several speakers, including Mayor Dean Mazzarella, who commended Latimer for her nearly four-decade commitment to the underserved. “Neddy is truly the story of us,” Mazzarella said. He expressed gratitude for her relentless efforts, humorously adding, “You can’t say no to Neddy,” especially when it comes to funding essential community projects.
The United Way of North Central Massachusetts also played a crucial role in funding the shelter initiative. President and CEO Kory Eng praised Latimer and her team for their proactive approach, stating, “The Spanish American Center is two steps ahead of us. All the time.” He emphasized that the shelter embodies the values of dignity and compassion that Latimer represents.
Board Chair of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, Thomas Hughes, described the gathering as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He reiterated that the shelter stands as a symbol of community care and support, affirming, “Everyone who seeks help here will be greeted by her name.”
A Legacy of Compassion
As the unveiling of the Neddy Latimer House sign took place, Latimer was visibly moved. “I am humbled and honored,” she expressed, thanking all those who contributed to the shelter’s establishment. Her emotional speech reflected her deep connection to the community she has served for decades.
Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, stood by her side, sharing in the pride of the occasion. The couple received a certificate of recognition from Bushman, alongside a bouquet of flowers presented to Latimer.
In a poignant moment, Latimer concluded her remarks by affirming the shelter’s purpose: “This place will become a beacon of hope. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your contribution and commitment to the Neddy Latimer House.”
Following the formal proceedings, attendees enjoyed refreshments and toured the shelter, which features a warm and welcoming environment. Before concluding the event, Father Julio Granados of the Holy Family of Nazareth Church offered a benediction, reminding everyone of the goodness that resides in all individuals and the importance of community support.
