Madison County, New York, will illuminate the Madison County Courthouse in green from November 4 to 11 as part of the nationwide Operation Green Light. This initiative supports military veterans and raises awareness of the challenges they face, while also promoting available resources for veterans and their families. This marks the fifth year that Madison County has participated in this campaign.
Supporting Veterans Through Community Engagement
Operation Green Light is organized by the New York State Association of Counties in collaboration with the National Association of Counties, and it aims to foster a supportive environment for veterans. The campaign began in 2021 as a joint effort involving the NYSAC, the NYS County Executives’ Association, and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association. It gained national traction when NACo adopted the initiative in 2022.
James J. Cunningham, Chairman of the Madison County Board, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Operation Green Light is just one small way we can show our veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for our safety and security.” He expressed gratitude to veterans, underscoring that their service is valued.
In addition to lighting the courthouse, Madison County encourages local municipalities, businesses, and residents to participate by replacing at least one light bulb with a green one. This simple act can be visible to neighbors and passersby, serving as a reminder of community support for veterans.
Engaging the Community and Continuing Support
Residents are urged to reach out to veterans they know, offering assistance such as transportation to medical appointments or simply a friendly conversation. By shining a green light, the community communicates that veterans are seen, appreciated, and supported. While the campaign is centered around Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to maintain their support year-round.
Ron Raymer, Director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency and a veteran himself, stated, “Operation Green Light is a great initiative and opportunity to send a strong and highly visible message to both the veteran community and active-duty service members alike who may call Madison County home.” He highlighted that the initiative reflects a commitment to providing a network of services designed to assist veterans in their transition back to civilian life.
For veterans seeking support, the Madison County Veterans Service Agency is available at (315) 366-2395 or through their website at www.madisoncounty.ny.gov. Veteran peer counselors can connect individuals with federal, state, and local benefits and services.
