Lynn Honors Heritage with 10th Annual Celebration Event

The city of Lynn is set to celebrate its rich cultural diversity with the 10th annual Lynn Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on October 10, 2023. The event, themed “Proud of My Hispanic Heritage,” will take place at City Hall starting at 15:30, featuring a vibrant parade of flags from the Lynn Common to the Lynn Auditorium. The celebration will include a ceremony showcasing poetry, music, and dances representing various Latin American countries.

This year’s festivities honor Outstanding Latino and Latino Pride recipients, culminating in a reception to acknowledge their contributions. The event promises to be a significant occasion for the community, showcasing the cultural heritage of its Hispanic residents.

The Proud of My Hispanic Heritage Celebration was initiated in 2016 at Breed Middle School by Spanish teacher Magalie Rowe. It began with the enthusiastic support of students from the Spanish National Junior Honor Society and Principal Julie Louf. The event has since grown, with key partnerships from local organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club of Lynn, Lawrence Staffing Services, the Latina Center Maria, and Full Color Signs and Graphics.

Magalie Rowe emphasizes the importance of the event, stating it allows Hispanic students in Lynn to “celebrate their culture, language, and identity.” She notes that many bilingual and bicultural young people often struggle to embrace their heritage. Rowe’s vision for the event is to provide representation, nurture pride, and foster a strong sense of community and voice among students.

The celebration reflects not only the achievements of the Hispanic community in Lynn but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to cultural recognition and diversity. As participants gather to honor their heritage, the event reinforces the significance of cultural pride and community solidarity.

This year’s celebration marks a decade of honoring Hispanic heritage in Lynn, showcasing the city’s dedication to inclusivity and cultural appreciation. With a full schedule of activities planned, attendees can expect a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that highlights the contributions of Hispanic culture to the community.
