Governor Murphy Highlights Achievements as He Leaves Office

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy delivered his final State of the State Address last week, reflecting on his achievements and expressing gratitude to the residents of the state. This address marked a significant moment as Murphy prepares to conclude his tenure on January 20, 2026. He emphasized the progress made during his administration and his optimism for the future of New Jersey.

Murphy’s message was clear and heartfelt: “Thank you.” He acknowledged the trust placed in him by the state’s approximately nine-and-a-half million residents and expressed appreciation for their unity during challenging times. Throughout his eight years in office, Murphy has cited major accomplishments, including nearly doubling the minimum wage and establishing the strongest economy in the Northeast.

Under his leadership, New Jersey saw the creation of a record number of good-paying jobs and a significant increase in small business openings. The governor highlighted the introduction of a new millionaire’s tax, which he said helped welcome more new residents than at any other point in the state’s history. Additionally, Murphy noted the full payments made into the state pension system for five consecutive years and the historic funding of public education.

Reflecting on Challenges and Progress

Murphy acknowledged the multitude of challenges faced during his time in office, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed over 35,000 lives in New Jersey. He also referenced the global crises that have profoundly affected many, including the invasion of Ukraine and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Despite these hurdles, Murphy asserted that the administration has made substantial strides in improving the lives of New Jersey’s working families. New rights, such as paid family leave and enhanced collective bargaining protections, were established. The state also eliminated over $1 billion in medical debt, benefiting nearly 800,000 residents, and is on track to implement universal pre-K education.

Efforts to reform the criminal justice system, improving public safety, and a significant reduction in crime rates were also highlighted as key achievements. Murphy stated that these accomplishments have restored trust in New Jersey’s governance and have garnered nine credit rating upgrades in just three years.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

As Murphy prepares to transition leadership to Mikie Sherrill, he expressed confidence in the future of New Jersey. Sherrill, the governor-elect, is described by Murphy as tough and intelligent, with a lifelong commitment to serving the state. He believes that under her leadership, New Jersey will continue to thrive.

Looking ahead, Murphy pointed to 2026, a landmark year for the state, which will see New Jersey host the FIFA World Cup and celebrate America’s 250th birthday. These events symbolize a bridge between New Jersey’s storied past and a promising future, from historic battles in Trenton to the global stage of the World Cup Final on July 19, 2026.

Murphy concluded his address by reaffirming that New Jersey remains a beacon of opportunity, encapsulating the essence of the American Dream. He thanked the people of New Jersey for the privilege of serving and for their partnership in building a stronger, fairer state. As he prepares to leave office, Murphy’s optimism about New Jersey’s future remains palpable, underscoring his belief in the resilience and potential of its residents.
