Discover the Untamed Beauty of Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago in southern Mozambique offers a unique experience distinct from the luxury resorts found on many tropical islands. According to an article by Stanley Stewart in the Financial Times, this archipelago lacks tarmacked roads and yacht clubs, presenting a more natural and unspoiled environment. Instead of crowded shops selling overpriced goods, visitors can enjoy a tranquil setting characterized by coastal beauty and a relaxed atmosphere.

During a recent visit to Benguerra, the second-largest island in the archipelago, Stewart described the scene of red-sailed dhows offshore as fishermen worked nearby and local women walked past with colorful bundles on their heads. The experience is further enhanced by the presence of six upscale hotels that blend seamlessly into the landscape. These accommodations, while luxurious, prioritize discretion and a connection to the surrounding life.

Stewart stayed at three resorts that exemplify the charm of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Azura Benguerra features 20 spacious thatched bungalows, each equipped with private pools. Azura Marlin, a modernist resort, offers 10 villas adorned in a striking blue-and-white color scheme. The standout among these is Kisawa Sanctuary, which comprises just eight villas. The design reflects the natural environment with almond and straw-colored tones, complemented by elegant African decor and sculptural baths.

Reaching the islands requires a speedboat journey of approximately 40 minutes from the mainland, creating an enticing sense of remoteness. The sounds of the surf at night create a soothing atmosphere, while the calls of over 150 resident bird species signal the dawn. The surrounding waters are well protected, offering vibrant snorkeling and diving opportunities. Stewart reported sightings of seahorses, stingrays, and even a hawksbill turtle at Two Mile Reef. Although he hoped to encounter a dugong, an elusive sea cow that resides in the area, he did not succeed.

For travelers interested in exploring this untouched paradise, Journeys by Design offers packages including five nights at Azura Marlin starting from $4,486, or at Kisawa Sanctuary from $21,983. The Bazaruto Archipelago stands out as a destination that combines natural beauty with a sense of serenity, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a unique getaway.
