Deputy DA Stephanie Wills Honored for Decades of Service

In a heartfelt ceremony on October 19, 2023, Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Wills was honored for her extensive career with the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. The event took place in Courtroom 4 of the County Courthouse in Media, where colleagues and friends filled the room to capacity to celebrate her contributions to the community. Outgoing District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer and incoming District Attorney Tanner Rouse presented Wills with a plaque recognizing her dedication to public service.

Stollsteimer, who is transitioning to a judgeship on the Court of Common Pleas, expressed his admiration for Wills during the ceremony. He humorously remarked that her retirement prompted him to consider his own, highlighting the significant impact she has had on the office. He described Wills as an exceptional prosecutor and an even better person, stating that her absence would be deeply felt.

Rouse, who has worked alongside Wills for six years, referred to her as a “legendary attorney” whose insights and professionalism will be sorely missed. He credited her with guiding him through challenges, including the complexities of managing cases during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rouse emphasized that Wills served as both a mentor and a sounding board throughout their collaboration, contributing significantly to his development as a supervisor.

Wills, visibly moved by the recognition, thanked her colleagues and those who supported her throughout her career. “I have loved being a DA,” she expressed, recalling the moment she first realized her passion for the role as a legal intern. Her journey with the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office began in 1994 as a college intern in court administration, eventually leading to her full-time position in 1998.

Throughout her tenure, Wills progressed through various roles, including serving in the juvenile unit and trial teams. She became a team leader in 2002 and later took on supervisory roles in the pre-trial and trial units, shaping the next generation of prosecutors. Reflecting on her career, Wills noted, “I loved criminal law… helping people, putting the cases up, helping the families, it all came together.”

Wills is known for her formidable presence in the courtroom, which commands respect from her peers. Her approach to the job has always been one of diligence and high expectations. “I was taught from some of the best,” she stated, recalling the mentorship she received early in her career. She emphasized the importance of competence in the legal field and encouraged her colleagues to seek guidance when needed.

While Wills has faced numerous challenges, including high-profile homicide cases and the complexities of the justice system, she takes pride in securing justice for victims and their families. She highlighted the emotional impact of her work, recalling letters from families expressing appreciation for the efforts made on their behalf.

As Wills prepares to retire at the age of 51, she plans to spend more time with her family and is open to exploring new opportunities in the future. Although she does not have immediate plans, she maintains her bar license and is keeping options open for what lies ahead.

Reflecting on her time in the office, Wills acknowledged the evolution of the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, including the appointment of the first female district attorney and the first Democrat to lead the office. She expressed gratitude for her experiences and the relationships she built over the years, emphasizing the importance of adapting to changes while remaining focused on delivering justice.

Wills’ retirement marks the end of an era for the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship, and a commitment to justice that will be remembered by her colleagues and the community she served.
