Community Unites for Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive in Springfield

The annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive is set to take place in Springfield, Delaware County, mobilizing the community to address hunger this winter. Scheduled for collection on February 7, the event aims to gather nonperishable food items to support local food charities.

On January 31, volunteers will distribute 20,000 door hangers across neighborhoods including Aston, Morton, Rutledge, Springfield, Westbrook Park in Upper Darby, and parts of Ridley Township. Residents are encouraged to leave their food donations outside their doors by 10:00 a.m. on collection day, with the door hangers serving as reminders.

Participants are asked to ensure that all donated food items are within expiration dates. In addition to food, the initiative will accept toiletries, formula, baby wipes, and diapers. For those unable to participate on collection day or those outside the designated neighborhoods, donations can be dropped off at Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church from February 1 to February 7.

This year, 13 local churches of various denominations, including St. Matthew, St. Francis, and Holy Cross, are collaborating to collect donations. Youth groups from these churches, along with teams from Ridley and Springfield high schools, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts, are actively involved in the effort.

The collected food will benefit numerous local charities such as City Team, Chester Eastside, and the Holy Cross Food Pantry, ensuring that community members in need receive vital support. Over the years, the Souper Bowl of Caring movement has raised over $220 million nationally, emphasizing its commitment to keeping resources local.
