Clarkston Welcomes New Affordable Housing Complex, Holy Family Haven

A new affordable housing complex, named Holy Family Haven, has been inaugurated in Clarkston, featuring 72 residential units aimed at providing low-income families with safe and secure living conditions. The project, which has already seen half of its units occupied, was celebrated in a grand opening ceremony attended by local leaders, community members, and students from the nearby Holy Family Catholic School, who contributed to the project’s naming.

The ceremony took place on October 25, 2023, at 1411 Port Drive, where the apartments were officially blessed by a priest. Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing, highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening.” The students showcased their artwork, sang their school song, and participated in prayers, emphasizing their connection to the new complex.

In her remarks, Mayor Monika Lawrence praised the project, commending John Pilcher, executive director of Horizon Housing Alliance, for delivering a high-quality housing solution. Pilcher reinforced that Holy Family Haven is designed to be a community rather than a homeless shelter, providing families with an environment to build their futures.

Currently, 30% of the units remain available for families who meet specific income criteria. Interested applicants can reach out to Catholic Charities for guidance on the application process. Mallahan emphasized that Holy Family Haven is more than just a place to live; it serves as a foundation for families to achieve their goals and make lasting changes in their lives.

The complex is not only focused on housing but also offers a comprehensive array of support services. These include mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery assistance, transportation for medical appointments, and employment help. Additionally, the initiative will provide access to fresh, healthy food, ensuring that residents have vital resources for their well-being.

Funding for the project came from KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment, which contributed $31.4 million for the construction. Of the 72 units, 70 are designated for families and individuals earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income, while 35 units are specifically reserved for those who have experienced homelessness.

As Holy Family Haven opens its doors, it stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the commitment to meeting housing needs in Clarkston. Applications for the apartments can be submitted through housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply.
