Chicagoan Edith Furst Howell Passes Away at 97

Edith Furst Howell, a beloved member of the Chicago community, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Warren Howell, who shared a long and fulfilling life with her.

Born on March 2, 1928, in Chicago, Edith was a fourth-generation resident of the city. She was the daughter of William H. Furst and Edith E. Furst. Her legacy continues through her daughters, Elizabeth (Ian) MacCallum of New Vernon, New Jersey, and Suzanne (Christopher) Smythe of Shaker Heights, Ohio. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and her brother, William C. Furst (Virginia), who resides in Glencoe, Illinois.

Education and Career

Edith’s educational journey began at New Trier High School, followed by her attendance at Vassar College and later Northwestern University. It was at Harris Trust and Savings Bank where she met her future husband, Bill. The couple married in 1953 and made their home in Winnetka, Illinois, where they actively participated in local affairs and worked diligently to maintain the village’s unique character.

Throughout her life, Edith nurtured a passion for interior design, which led her to establish a successful design business. Her talents were not limited to design; she also had a profound love for gardening and flower arranging. Edith was an active member of the Garden Club of Winnetka and the Green Meadows Garden Club, where she shared her enthusiasm and expertise with fellow gardening aficionados.

Legacy and Remembrance
