Celebrating the Life and Legacy of James R. Knapp

The family of James Rochester Knapp, affectionately known as Jim, has announced his passing at the age of 89. Jim’s life, celebrated for its profound impact on Southern California, was deeply rooted in his unwavering faith, generosity, and intellect. He left an indelible mark on the community, both through his professional achievements and personal connections.

Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s journey began in a region that shaped his identity. He met his beloved wife, Sally Diane Dewar, during his formative years, and their love story culminated in marriage in September 1958. Both attended Stanford University, where their shared experiences laid the foundation for a partnership that flourished over nearly seven decades.

After relocating to San Francisco, Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law. His legal career commenced with Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana, before he joined forces with friends to establish the Newport Beach firm, Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. Jim later transitioned from law to real estate development, playing a pivotal role in shaping Southern California’s landscape through his work with Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises.

In 1973, he founded Brookhollow, a company that became a family affair. As Chairman and strategic advisor, Jim took great pride in collaborating with his sons and grandsons, imparting the values of hard work and integrity that defined his own life. His professional accomplishments were complemented by a commitment to community service, where he lent his expertise to various organizations, including the boards of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School.

Jim’s contributions extended beyond his professional life; he was a founding member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, and served as an officer of Pacific Enterprises. His dedication to service was matched only by his devotion to family. Jim and Sally traveled extensively together, yet always prioritized quality time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A man of deep Christian faith, Jim found solace in reading the Bible and attending Mariners Church. His intellectual curiosity and quick wit made him a cherished companion, and his quiet generosity touched the lives of many. He is survived by his wife, Sally Knapp, and their extended family, which includes children Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany), along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A service to honor Jim’s life will be held at Mariners Church on December 15, 2025, at 10:30 in the morning. A private burial will follow at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family finds comfort in knowing that a good and faithful man has completed his journey and is now at peace.
