Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and the Great Bend Public Library is offering several engaging activities to celebrate the occasion. Couples, friends, and families can find unique and budget-friendly ways to enjoy this romantic holiday. From games to crafts, the library has something for everyone.
The library invites guests to participate in a game of Chocolate Tic Tac Toe and a Valentine’s scavenger hunt. Both activities encourage creativity and fun for visitors of all ages. In addition, attendees can browse themed book displays that highlight romantic titles perfect for the season. For those who prefer a cozy night in, the library provides access to a wide selection of e-books through platforms like Libby and hoopla.
Crafting, Learning, and Community Events
On February 14, starting at 18:00, the library will host an Adult Craft session where participants can create beautiful macramé moon decorations. Supplies are limited, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as the east entrance will remain open until 18:15.
In addition to crafts, the library offers technology assistance through its February computer classes. These sessions will take place at the Senior Center on Mondays at 10:00 and during the Brown Bag session on Wednesdays at 12:00 in the library’s Lower Level Meeting Room. For those unable to attend the scheduled classes, the weekly Tech Tuesday program at 11:00 offers one-on-one help.
Storytime for younger visitors remains a staple at the library, with the Early Literacy Story Time occurring every Tuesday at 10:30. The library also hosts an Open Book Club meeting on February 20 at 19:00. This month’s featured book is “James” by Percival Everett, a novel that reimagines the classic tale of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of Jim. Copies are available for checkout at the Front Desk.
Upcoming Competitions and Cultural Events
The library is also gearing up for its Cupcake Wars competition scheduled for February 24. Teens in grades 6-12 can register to compete in a series of challenges aimed at showcasing their frosting skills. Interested participants should sign up by the deadline of February 18 through the library’s teen program website.
Genealogy enthusiasts can seek assistance during the library’s Genealogy Thursdays, held each week at 11:00. This program is designed for both beginners and seasoned researchers needing support on their family history projects.
For those interested in Japanese visual culture, the Teen Manga & Anime Club welcomes new members. The February meeting will focus on “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” by Satoru Yamaguchi. Participants will discuss the first volume of the manga and watch the corresponding anime episode on February 19, from 17:30 to 19:45.
Haylee Huddleston, the Teen Services librarian, encourages everyone to explore the library’s offerings.
