Arizona Salvation Army Seeks Donations as Deadline Approaches

The Salvation Army’s Southwest Division is striving to meet its holiday fundraising goal, facing a shortfall of $775,000 from its target of $2.3 million in Arizona. With the annual Red Kettle campaign concluding on Christmas Eve, officials are rallying support from the community to close this gap.

Volunteers are key to the campaign’s success, and one standout is Carl Shelton, a dedicated volunteer and polio survivor from Surprise, Arizona. Shelton, who has been ringing bells for the past four years, is making a unique impact by dressing as Santa Claus and using a wheelchair adorned with Christmas lights. His creative approach aims to inspire donations and spread holiday cheer outside a local Fry’s Food Store.

Scott Johnson, the public relations director for the Salvation Army Southwest Division, expressed optimism despite the current deficit. “The people of Arizona are very generous,” Johnson noted. “We’re hopeful we can make up that deficit here in the next few days.” This sentiment is echoed in the urgency of their message as the campaign nears its end.

Shelton’s dedication goes beyond traditional volunteering. He engages with donors by sharing heartwarming stories about the Salvation Army’s impact on the community. “I hear all kinds of stories about how the Salvation Army helped them back in their earlier days,” Shelton said. “It makes you warm knowing that this is all going to help somebody that’s in need.”

As part of his efforts, Shelton distributes candy canes to children who contribute to his red kettle. He emphasizes that the joy brought by these small gestures is immensely rewarding. “The smiles you get from the kids, man, it’s worth it 100%,” he added.

The Red Kettle campaign will continue to accept donations at storefronts until December 24, and contributions can also be made online through the Salvation Army’s website. As the clock ticks down, the organization remains hopeful that community support will help them reach their goal before the holiday season ends.

This initiative not only aims to provide essential services but also highlights the spirit of giving during the festive season. The Salvation Army relies heavily on community contributions, and every donation, large or small, makes a difference in the lives of those in need.
