Piedmont Mountainside’s Radiation Oncology Center Celebrates First Year

Piedmont Mountainside Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Center is celebrating its first anniversary, marked by a successful year of providing high-quality cancer care to patients in the region. Since its opening on February 4, 2025, the facility has witnessed strong patient demand, expanded operating hours, and delivered over 3,000 radiation treatments to individuals seeking care close to home.

The center was established to serve patients from Pickens, Fannin, Gilmer, Gordon, and Murray counties, and its reputation has attracted individuals from as far away as Murphy, North Carolina. Initially operating on a half-day schedule, the center quickly transitioned to full-day operations to meet the growing need for its services.

Advanced Treatments and Technology

Piedmont Mountainside’s facility features some of the most advanced radiation technology in Georgia. This includes a linear accelerator, a CT simulation scanner, and the Brainlab ExactTrac Dynamic system, which is the first of its kind within the Piedmont healthcare system to offer precise radiosurgery.

The center provides a wide range of treatment options, including:
– IMRT and IGRT radiation therapy
– Stereotactic brain and body treatments (SRT and SBRT)
– Tattoo-less image guidance
– Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) specifically for breast cancer patients

In addition, patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary care team that includes a dietitian, speech therapist, and case manager, ensuring comprehensive support throughout their treatment journey.

Patient-Centric Care and Recognition

Under the leadership of radiation oncologist Dr. Adam Nowlan, the program has received high praise from patients. A recent Press Ganey survey conducted in January 2026 highlighted a patient’s appreciation for Dr. Nowlan’s thoroughness and empathy, stating, “I can assure you, he’s the best of the best. And yes, his staff is equally caring and empathetic at a time when you really need it.”

According to Kayla Easley, Manager of Outpatient Services, patient surveys consistently reflect themes of excellent care, outstanding communication, and a supportive environment, even amidst the stress of treatment.

As Piedmont Mountainside Hospital looks to the future, its leaders remain committed to enhancing patient care and expanding access to services for communities across the region. Denise Ray, CEO of Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, noted, “Opening this facility one year ago was a milestone for our hospital and for this region. What we’ve seen since then affirms why this investment mattered. Patients deserve world-class cancer care without leaving their communities, and this team has delivered that with compassion, precision, and excellence.”

With rising patient volumes and a dedicated clinical team, Piedmont Mountainside’s Radiation Oncology Center is well-positioned to continue its momentum, further solidifying access to high-quality cancer care close to home.
