Kidney Donation Deepens Family Ties for Mitchell Family

A profound act of generosity has strengthened family bonds in Mitchell, South Dakota, where Doug Backlund donated his kidney to his uncle, Dan Backlund. The operation, which took place in April 2024, transformed Dan’s health and rekindled his appetite for green olives—a favorite he jokes about during family gatherings.

Both men shared their heartfelt journey at a recent meeting of the Mitchell Lions Club. During their discussion, Doug, 41, and Dan, 71, recounted the emotional and physical trials leading up to the transplant, which was crucial as Dan faced the prospect of dialysis before the surgery.

Dan discovered his kidney issues at age 16 during a routine physical, which revealed abnormal creatinine levels, an indicator of kidney function. Six years ago, he began exploring the possibility of a transplant with his doctor. Realizing the urgency of his situation, Doug reached out to his uncle, expressing his desire to help.

“He called and said he wanted to talk… I said, ‘Why in the hell would you give me a kidney?’” Dan recalled. Doug’s response was simple: “Because you’re my uncle and you need one.”

As Doug navigated the donor screening process, which included extensive blood tests, physical exams, and psychological evaluations, he learned that the likelihood of them being a match was extremely small. He described the moment he found out about the compatibility as akin to “winning the lottery.”

Originally scheduled for February 2024, the surgery was postponed due to concerns about Dan’s blood work. This unexpected delay was frustrating for both men, as they had prepared for the procedure and were eager to move forward.

Eventually, both received clearance for surgery, and they reported to the hospital together on a Friday morning. Doug, who had a unique request, wanted to document the experience. “I actually have photos of the doctor carrying the kidney on a silver platter with ice from me to Dan,” Doug shared, highlighting the emotional weight of the event.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, over 25,000 kidney transplant surgeries take place annually in the United States. Despite this, around 90,000 people are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant at any given time.

Dan expressed his deep gratitude for his nephew’s decision. The new kidney has not only improved his health but also allowed him to spend more time with his four grandchildren. “He fully understands how appreciative I am,” Dan said, reflecting on the significance of their bond. “What do you do for a person that gives you a kidney? There’s not really much you can do. He understands that. He told me it was a gift he wanted to give.”

Their story of resilience and generosity resonates beyond their family, serving as a powerful reminder of the impact of organ donation. Individuals can register as organ donors through the Health Resources & Services Administration website or during driver’s license renewals, contributing to a life-saving cause.
