Mary Ruth Ingleby, a beloved educator and community member, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 5, 2025, at the age of 75. Her death followed a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, which she faced with courage and dignity.
Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Mary was the third of six children in the Ingleby family, which included two brothers and four sisters. Her early life was marked by profound experiences, including the difficult decision at sixteen to give up her first child for adoption. This pivotal moment profoundly influenced her life, instilling in her a passion for nurturing and educating young minds.
After obtaining an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, Mary dedicated many years to teaching children aged three to five. Among her students was her second son, Damian, who developed a lifelong love for reading and learning, thanks in part to his mother’s guidance.

Mary’s love for the ocean and beach led her to call Santa Cruz home for over 53 years. She was not only an educator but also a passionate advocate for animals and minority rights. Her commitment to these causes was evident in the time and resources she devoted to them throughout her life.
In addition to her advocacy work, Mary found joy in music, singing, and dance. She participated in various choirs and singing duos, creating an atmosphere of melody and rhythm that filled her home. Music was an integral part of her life, bringing joy to herself and those around her.
