David Michael Cotter Jr., aged 37, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, passed away on November 5, 2025, after a prolonged battle with mental health issues. His untimely death has left a profound impact on his family and friends, who remember him for his warmth, humor, and dedication to service.
Born on February 29, 1988, in Saint Paul, David was the son of David Cotter Sr. and Anne Marie Bluhm. He earned his General Educational Development (GED) certificate and subsequently enlisted in the United States Army National Guard. David served with distinction from October 12, 2005, to October 11, 2007, achieving the rank of Private First Class. During his military tenure, he was stationed at Fort Benning in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received various medals and honors for his commitment and service.
After leaving the military, David transitioned into civilian life as a barge deckhand with Upper River Services. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passions for fishing and bowling, while his enthusiasm for video games and support of the Minnesota Vikings showcased his playful spirit. Colleagues and friends fondly recall his big, comforting hugs and infectious laughter, which brought joy to those around him.
Family was paramount to David, who was a devoted father to his children: David Cotter III, Marianna Cotter, Nakoma Cotter, and Cayda Cotter. He was known for being a reliable presence in their lives, always ready to lend support when needed. In addition to his children, David is survived by his brother, Christopher Thull; sister, Cesley Chavez; mother, Anne Marie Bluhm; uncle, Mark Bluhm; and father, David Cotter Sr.. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who cherish his memory.
David was preceded in death by several family members, including his great grandparents, Frances Bluhm and Samuel Bluhm; grandfather, Fredrick Bluhm Sr.; grandmother, Theresa Bluhm; stepfather, Robert Chavez; sister, Mary Anne Bluhm; and uncles, Thomas Bluhm Jr. and Frederick Bluhm Jr.
A memorial service to honor David Cotter Jr. will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the Galilee Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minnesota, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Following the service, interment will take place at Union Cemetery in Maplewood, Minnesota. The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, Minnesota, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
