“Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective,” a new production featuring the iconic detective, is captivating audiences at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. The show will run until February 15, 2024, showcasing a series of action-packed adventures that take viewers from Switzerland to London, France, and Luxembourg.
The production, adapted from stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is directed and written by Bill Van Horn, who also plays the role of Dr. Watson. Van Horn describes the play as having a “madcap” style filled with comedy. Actor Harry Smith, who takes on the titular role, emphasizes the humor and dynamic nature of the performance. “Sherlock plays a number of other roles within the play because he’s a master of disguise,” Smith explains.
The character of Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as a brilliant detective with extraordinary deductive skills. “Holmes is an amazing genius,” Van Horn states, highlighting the character’s remarkable abilities. Dr. Watson, on the other hand, serves as Holmes’ steadfast companion, providing support and often requiring rescue himself. Van Horn adds that the relationship between Holmes and Watson evolves as they age, which is a key focus of the narrative.
The play’s first act centers around Holmes’ supposed “demise,” while the second act brings him back into Watson’s life. Together, they embark on a mission to “fight crime once more.” Van Horn believes that the essence of the show lies in the theme of friendship, which resonates throughout their dynamic.
A cast of six actors takes on multiple roles, contributing to the vibrant storytelling. Mary Martello portrays Mrs. Hudson, Holmes’ landlady at 221B Baker Street, who is characterized as fearless. Martello also plays Colonel Sebastian Moran, described as a villain, albeit one not as formidable as Holmes’ arch-nemesis, Moriarty. According to Smith, capturing Moriarty is a significant goal for Holmes, who sees it as part of his legacy.
