Miley Cyrus Releases Original Song Inspired by Personal Tragedy for Avatar

Miley Cyrus has announced the release of a new original song titled “Fire and Ash” for the upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash. This project is particularly meaningful for Cyrus, who reflects on her own experiences with loss and recovery following the devastating fires that impacted Los Angeles. The Woolsey Fire in 2018 resulted in the destruction of her Malibu home, which profoundly affected her creative process.

Cyrus discarded the EP trilogy that began with She Is Coming after losing important notes and hard drives in the flames. In her view, this loss signaled that those songs were not meant for her. Now, she feels a sense of purpose with “Fire and Ash,” a track that resonates with her journey of rebuilding from destruction.

“Having been personally affected by fire and being rebuilt from the ashes, this project holds profound meaning for me,” Cyrus shared on Instagram. She offered fans a glimpse of the song, which currently lacks a set release date. Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

The lyrics capture themes of resilience and unity, with Cyrus singing, “Even through the flames/Even through the ashes in the sky. Baby, when we dream/We dream as one.” The song was co-written with familiar collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Ronson and Cyrus previously worked together on the hit single “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” while her collaboration with Wyatt dates back to 2018.

Cyrus’s talents have not gone unnoticed in the industry. She received a nomination for Best Original Song at the 2025 Golden Globes for “Beautiful That Way,” a piece she co-created with Wyatt and Lykke Li for Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl.

In her Instagram statement, Cyrus expressed gratitude towards James Cameron, the creator of the Avatar franchise, saying, “Thank you, Jim, for the opportunity to turn that experience into musical medicine. The film’s themes of unity, healing, and love resonate deeply within my soul.”

Cameron has long articulated the deeper purpose behind the Avatar films. In a conversation with Rolling Stone earlier this year, he stated, “I’ve justified making Avatar movies to myself for the last 20 years, not based on how much money we made, but on the basis that hopefully it can do some good.” He emphasized the importance of connecting humanity to nature and respecting the world around us, arguing that while entertainment is essential, films like Avatar can also inspire reflection and change.

With “Fire and Ash,” Cyrus not only contributes to the Avatar legacy but also channels her personal experiences into a powerful artistic expression. As anticipation builds for the film’s release, her new song promises to resonate with audiences on multiple levels.
