Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon Team Up for New Comedy Film

A new comedy film featuring renowned actors Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon is gaining momentum as it progresses through development at Amazon MGM Studios. The project, titled Compulsive Liar, is an adaptation of the Quebec film Menteur, and its release is eagerly anticipated by audiences.

According to a report by Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has officially acquired Compulsive Liar. Nanjiani will star in the film, and both he and Gordon will serve as executive producers alongside Holly Brown from Gaumont and Émile Gaudreault. The film’s production will be managed by 21 Laps and Gaumont, with Shawn Levy and Dan Levine producing for 21 Laps and Nicolas Atlan and Sidonie Dumas for Gaumont.

The original Menteur film, written by Émile Gaudreault, Éric K. Boulianne, and Sébastien Ravary, follows a habitual liar named Simon, whose family and coworkers attempt to stage an intervention. When Simon rejects their efforts, he wakes up to find that every lie he has told has manifested into reality. Emily Feher will oversee the adaptation for 21 Laps.

Nanjiani and Gordon previously collaborated on The Big Sick, which earned them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film garnered multiple accolades, including Best First Screenplay at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Awards. It also made the American Film Institute’s Top 10 Movies of the Year list.

In 2024, Gordon and Nanjiani launched their production company Winter Coat and signed a first-look deal with Sony Television. Nanjiani’s recent work includes a stand-up special titled Night Thoughts, set to premiere on Hulu on December 19, 2024. His diverse television credits feature roles in Only Murders in the Building, Poker Face, Welcome to Chippendales, and Obi Wan. Upcoming film projects for Nanjiani include Ella McCay, Driver’s Ed, and The Breadwinner.

As the development of Compulsive Liar continues, interest from both fans and industry insiders is expected to grow, particularly given the successful track record of its creators.
