Dwayne Johnson has expressed interest in reprising his role as The Scorpion King in an upcoming film from the Mummy franchise. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson stated that he would consider returning, but emphasized that any continuation of the franchise belongs to Brendan Fraser, the original star. “That is Brendan Fraser’s franchise. I love that man. He’s one of my greatest supporters,” Johnson remarked, highlighting their mutual respect and support.
Johnson first appeared in the franchise in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, where he portrayed The Scorpion King. This film was a major success, grossing over $435 million worldwide and earning a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Following this, Johnson starred in a spin-off, The Scorpion King, released in 2002, which generated $178 million globally but received poorer critical reception with scores of 40% from critics and 37% from audiences.
Despite his pivotal role in the franchise, Johnson did not return for subsequent films, with other actors taking on the Scorpion King character. He acknowledged that the franchise significantly impacted his career, noting, “Because that franchise changed my life.”
The Future of The Mummy Franchise
The Mummy franchise, which began in 1932, has undergone several reinventions over the decades. After the original Universal Monster movies, a modern series featuring Fraser as adventurer Rick O’Connell has captivated audiences since the late 1990s. The most recent installment, released in 2017, was directed by Alex Kurtzman and starred Tom Cruise. This film aimed to launch a shared universe called the Dark Universe; however, it faltered at the box office and faced negative reviews, leading to the project’s cancellation.
Currently, a new film in the franchise is slated for release in April 2024. Directed by Lee Cronin, it will feature a cast that includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and May Calamawy. There are also reports that Fraser may return alongside his co-star Rachel Weisz, reigniting interest in the beloved series.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming film, Johnson’s willingness to return as The Scorpion King adds another layer of excitement for fans. His acknowledgment of Fraser’s legacy within the franchise underscores the enduring connection between the actors and the series. The Mummy franchise continues to evolve while retaining its core elements that have resonated with audiences for generations.
