Chicago Unveils Honorary George Wendt Way to Celebrate Actor’s Legacy

The Chicago neighborhood of Beverly celebrated the late actor George Wendt on Sunday with the unveiling of an honorary street name, George Wendt Way. This new designation honors the beloved actor known for his iconic role as “Norm” in the television series Cheers, where he captured the hearts of audiences with his warm and humorous portrayal.

The event took place at 92nd Place and Bell Street, the very area where Wendt grew up. His widow, Bernadette Birkett, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, stating, “The love and support for my husband and his legacy is just amazing to me, but not surprising. He had great humility, but he deserved to be loved because he was a wonderful person.”

Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Wendt’s contributions to entertainment and to reminisce about the man who became a symbol of friendship and camaraderie through his character. Alderman Matt O’Shea encapsulated the sentiment felt by many, saying, “I’m guilty, like many of you, at some point in my life, telling folks, ‘Oh yeah, I grew up with George Wendt.’”

The celebration drew a large crowd, reflecting the deep connection Wendt maintained with his roots. His brother, Paul Wendt, shared a lighthearted moment from their childhood, saying, “I never really had a chance to get irate with anyone without anyone noticing who it was. So, that was a bit of a burden.”

Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Wendt became a household name through his various performances, including his memorable role as a Chicago Bears superfan on Saturday Night Live. His career began in the 1970s at the acclaimed improv theatre, Second City, where he not only honed his craft but also met his future wife, Bernadette.

Reflecting on his character’s enduring legacy, Bernadette noted, “If he were here, he’d be wearing shorts and a t-shirt because, if he put on pants, my kids would think he had a job.” This sentiment captures the essence of Wendt—an approachable and genuine individual who remained relatable to fans throughout his life.

The street renaming serves as a reminder of Wendt’s impact on both the entertainment industry and his local community. As residents of Beverly now walk along George Wendt Way, they will remember not only the character he portrayed but also the man behind the laughter, who brought joy to countless lives.
