Tommy DeCarlo, the lead singer of the iconic rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60. His family confirmed his passing on Monday, revealing that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2023. The family shared their grief in a heartfelt post on Facebook, stating, “He fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.” They requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
The diagnosis came after DeCarlo experienced a sudden brain bleed, which led to an emergency craniotomy. During the procedure, surgeons discovered two melanoma masses on his brain, as well as another spot on his lungs, according to a GoFundMe campaign launched in support of his medical expenses in late 2025.
Legacy of Boston and DeCarlo’s Journey
Boston was formed in 1975, originally featuring Brad Delp as the lead vocalist. Delp was a key figure in the band until his untimely death in 2007. Following that, DeCarlo stepped into the role after being discovered by guitarist Tom Scholz. Under DeCarlo’s leadership, the band continued to perform classics such as “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” and “Amanda.”
Boston’s debut album, released in 1976, is recognized as one of the best-selling albums by an American rock band, achieving a remarkable 17× Platinum certification from the RIAA as of 2025. This strong legacy solidifies their place in rock history, and DeCarlo played a significant role in maintaining the band’s popularity in recent years.
In addition to his work with Boston, DeCarlo formed his own band, DECARLO, alongside his son, Tommy DeCarlo Jr.. He also released two albums as a solo artist, showcasing his musical talents beyond the iconic band.
Fans and fellow musicians alike have expressed their condolences and shared memories of DeCarlo’s impact on the music industry. His contributions to Boston and the rock genre will be remembered fondly as the band continues to inspire generations of music lovers.
As the family mourns the loss of a beloved member, they have highlighted the importance of support and love during this challenging time. Friends and fans are encouraged to respect their privacy while they grieve and celebrate the life of Tommy DeCarlo.
