Blake Burt’s 124-Pound Transformation Mirrors ‘Boots’ Journey

Blake Burt, the star of Netflix’s popular series Boots, has undergone a remarkable personal transformation, shedding 124 pounds as he embodied the evolution of his character, John. This journey mirrors John’s struggles and triumphs throughout the series, showcasing not only a physical change but also a deeper commitment to health and well-being.

Burt, 32, shared insights about his weight loss journey with Us Weekly, emphasizing that health was his primary focus. “Health was the No. 1 focus,” he stated. The support from the studio was instrumental, allowing him to fully engage in both his character’s and his own transformation. Initially, the plan called for a “much smaller” on-screen adjustment, but as Burt delved into the character’s narrative, he felt compelled to pursue a more significant change.

“The original transformation just wasn’t enough,” Burt explained. He collaborated closely with his primary trainer, Duke Rousse of the Duke Academy in New Orleans, who played a critical role in his physical transformation. Additionally, Burt trained with Billy Eubanks in Mississippi and partnered with Clean Creations for meal prep, highlighting the importance of teamwork in achieving his goals.

Burt’s commitment to both his character and personal wellness faced challenges. He began his weight loss journey at around 320 pounds, progressing to 289 pounds by the second episode. “We cut down to 257 pounds,” he said, noting that the production pause due to the SAG-AFTRA strike halted his weight loss temporarily. Ultimately, he fluctuated between 257 pounds and 289 pounds as he prepared for potential reshoots, culminating in a total loss of 124 pounds.

“I had a personal mission as well because I struggled with my weight so I’ve been through that side,” Burt reflected.

This personal mission resonated deeply with him as he navigated the challenges of weight loss while filming. He dealt with moments of doubt and exhaustion, particularly during intense training sessions that sometimes lasted up to five hours. “There were days where I was down mentally,” he admitted.

His castmates provided crucial support during these tough times. “They saw how difficult it was because I was the biggest dude,” he explained, recounting an instance when he nearly passed out due to low blood sugar after extensive workouts. Burt expressed gratitude for their assistance, emphasizing the sense of brotherhood that developed on set.

After filming wrapped, Burt faced a personal tragedy when his father suffered a massive stroke in January 2023, which ultimately led to his passing. This loss took an emotional toll on Burt, causing him to regain some weight. “It was hard to see progress slip away,” he acknowledged. However, he found strength in his family and the memory of his father, motivating him to resume his health journey.

“I finally got my head back on straight a couple of months later and ended up starting to lose it again,” Burt reported. Currently, he weighs around 242 pounds, maintaining a balance that is only about 20 pounds above his final filming weight. “We’re gonna try to transform again and get back to where I want to be,” he affirmed.

The success of Boots extends beyond Burt’s personal journey. Since its premiere in October, the series has doubled its audience, achieving a notable position as the No. 2 show on Netflix. Burt’s portrayal of John has resonated with viewers, who appreciate the character’s growth and resilience. “The drive that he has now in this story… I obviously think he’s going to continue to better himself — physically, mentally and spiritually,” Burt noted.

Fans have rallied behind the show, advocating for a second season, a testament to its impact and reach. “It’s been honestly incredible,” Burt said, reflecting on the positive reception. “Everybody can watch this and take something positive from it.”

As Boots continues to stream on Netflix, the journey of Blake Burt and his character John serves as an inspiring narrative of personal transformation and resilience in the face of adversity.
