American McGee Returns to Game Development with New Project

American McGee, known for his iconic action-adventure series based on *Alice in Wonderland*, has announced his return to game development after a brief retirement. This resurgence is marked by a new spiritual successor inspired by his successful line of plush toys, known as *Plushie Dreadfuls*.

After stepping back from the industry in 2023 following the rejection of his pitch for a third Alice game by Electronic Arts (EA), McGee has found renewed inspiration. In a recent interview with *GamesRadar*, he explained how the success of his plushie business and interactions with fans in Japan reignited his passion for storytelling in games.

McGee and his wife, Yeni Zhang, founded Plushie Dreadfuls in 2015 while attempting to support their proposal for *Alice: Asylum*. The line has since flourished, even allowing McGee to repay an old loan to gaming pioneer John Carmack. Reflecting on this unexpected success, McGee remarked, “It’s like a rocket that took off without us knowing there was even a rocket.”

A pivotal moment occurred while McGee was managing a pop-up shop for Plushie Dreadfuls in Tokyo. There, he encountered enthusiastic fans who expressed their admiration for the *Alice* games. This experience prompted him to recognize that he still had stories to tell. “I can’t just sit on these ideas,” he said. “When I sit on ideas like that, it makes me crazy.”

Emerging Concept and Vision

While still in the early stages of development, McGee’s spiritual successor will reportedly center on a character named James, an orphan akin to Alice, who becomes involved with the enigmatic Plushie Dreadfuls family. McGee has indicated that the narrative will connect directly to *Alice: Madness Returns*, the second entry in the *Alice* series. “I’ve made an explicit point to link the start of the Plushie Dreadfuls game with the end of *Madness Returns*,” he noted, emphasizing that this relationship will not infringe on any legal issues.

McGee’s journey to develop a third *Alice* game spanned over a decade, during which he undertook extensive preproduction work. This effort culminated in the publication of a design document on his Patreon page. However, EA ultimately declined to greenlight the project or entertain offers for the intellectual property, citing the importance of *Alice* to their overall game catalog, according to McGee’s statements in 2023.

As McGee embarks on this new venture, he retains full creative control, which raises hopes for the project’s successful realization. His previous experiences and the unique foundation of the *Plushie Dreadfuls* brand provide a promising backdrop for what could become a compelling addition to the gaming landscape.

While the gaming community awaits further developments, McGee’s return signifies a potentially exciting chapter for fans of the *Alice* series and those intrigued by the innovative fusion of plush toys and interactive storytelling.
