As winter approaches, New Yorkers are gearing up for travel, utilizing various modes of transportation to navigate the season. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, there is a noticeable increase in people preparing to hit the road, reflecting a broader trend of recovery in the travel sector.
Lisa Jackson, a resident of Rochester, exemplifies this readiness. She emphasizes the importance of preparation for safe travels during winter. “I’m a planner, so I know if I’m traveling, I’ve got to make sure I have everything done so I don’t have to worry about it,” she shared. Jackson is currently visiting Complete Automotive Solutions to ensure her vehicle is winter-ready.
At the automotive repair shop, service manager Nick Mastrodonato noted that many clients are scheduling maintenance appointments before embarking on trips. “A lot of people are trying to do their maintenance before they go on trips. You know, make sure their tires, their brakes, suspension are all good for the long trips,” he explained. This proactive approach is crucial as travelers prepare to navigate potentially hazardous winter conditions.
Travel Trends in New York
The overall outlook for travel in New York is positive. Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, stated, “I’d say it’s robust. We are definitely recovering from the government shutdown, particularly in the aviation sector.” Dominguez highlighted a significant uptick in travel activity, noting, “We’re seeing a full-scale return to travel across the United States and, in particular, here in New York. Every mode of transportation is being utilized—planes, trains, roads, and cars.”
This resurgence in travel is further supported by data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), which indicates that millions are expected to travel this holiday season. With gas prices trending downward, travelers can anticipate stable fuel costs, enhancing the likelihood of road trips. “The trend is still downward,” said Paul Marone from the Repair Shop and Gasoline Dealers Association of New York.
Marone emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance for those planning road trips. “Your car has to be ready for the weather. You can get good gas mileage like that if you prepare ahead. If you’re taking a trip, just go easy,” he advised.
Planning for Safe Travels
As New Yorkers prepare for their winter journeys, Dominguez offers practical advice for travelers. “My best advice is always plan ahead. Be in touch with your airline, download the app, make sure you know what your logistics are, where you need to go. Keep an eye on the weather, because obviously, it’s New York,” she stated.
With the holiday season approaching, the enthusiasm for travel reflects a collective desire to reconnect with family and friends. The ongoing preparations signal a renewed confidence in the ability to travel safely and effectively, contributing to the recovery of the tourism and transportation sectors in New York.
As winter sets in, travelers are not just planning trips; they are embracing the opportunity to explore while ensuring they are well-prepared for whatever the weather may bring.
