Atlanta Gas Light to Build $50 Million LNG Facility Near Valdosta

Atlanta Gas Light has announced plans to construct a satellite liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Lowndes County, close to Valdosta. This initiative aims to enhance the region’s energy capacity and support ongoing industrial growth, particularly in the food production sector. The Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority revealed the proposal on February 13, 2026.

According to Niki Ogletree, president and CEO of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority, the new facility is essential for addressing the energy demands of both existing and new industries. “Having a satellite LNG facility is imperative to support expanded operations, including energy-intensive operations such as food processing and manufacturing,” she stated.

Investment and Economic Impact

The facility, which represents a significant investment of $50 million, is expected to create up to 90 jobs during its construction phase. Upon completion, it will also generate several highly skilled full-time positions. The Development Authority estimates that the facility will contribute approximately $531,528 annually in local tax revenue.

Natural gas, when cooled to about minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 degrees Celsius), becomes a liquid that is easier to store and transport. In its liquid state, natural gas occupies roughly 600 times less volume compared to its gaseous form. This allows for greater distribution flexibility and improved reliability of supply, particularly important for both residential and industrial customers.

The facility will not only bolster natural gas capacity for current users but also prepare for anticipated industrial growth. Many local businesses and residents depend on a stable natural gas supply for activities such as cooking and heating, making reliable energy access a crucial factor for business expansion and site selection.

Meeting Growing Demand

The market growth in the Valdosta area has nearly exhausted the available natural gas supply, prompting the need for the satellite LNG facility as a cost-effective solution to meet projected demand. “Companies increasingly ask about natural gas availability as part of their location decisions,” Ogletree added. “This facility will play a key role in attracting new industries that bring jobs to the area and support continued investment in our community.”

Jason Shaw, chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission, emphasized the importance of reliable energy infrastructure for economic growth. “When energy planning is aligned with economic development efforts, communities are better positioned to compete, grow, and thrive,” he remarked. The Georgia Public Service Commission has already approved over $12 million since 2022 to expand natural gas services for economic development projects in the Valdosta area, with Atlanta Gas Light contributing more than $4 million to the regional infrastructure.

With more than 65 inquiries regarding economic development in recent years, dependable energy infrastructure remains crucial for fostering manufacturing growth and maintaining long-term competitiveness in the community. The satellite LNG facility will feature bulk LNG storage tanks, truck unloading infrastructure, and safety systems, among other components.

Once operational, the facility is anticipated to begin serving the Valdosta community in 2027, marking a significant step toward meeting the energy needs of the region’s evolving industrial landscape.
