Ohio REACH Expands Support for 400 Former Foster Youth Today

URGENT UPDATE: Ohio REACH is transforming higher education access for former foster youth in Ohio, now supporting nearly 400 students across 57 colleges and universities. This initiative, highlighted in a recent report by Spectrum News1, is making headlines as it helps students like Brooke Winstead achieve their academic goals.

Winstead, who aged out of the foster system, successfully graduated from the University of Cincinnati thanks to the resources provided by Ohio REACH. She shared her inspiring journey, stating, “Not having parents made me more of a hungry person to go after my goals.” This sentiment encapsulates the drive foster youth need, and Ohio REACH is stepping up to pave the way.

As Ohio REACH expands its reach, retention and success rates for these students are on the rise, according to Susan Ballard, director at the Ohio Children’s Alliance. However, the situation remains dire as the number of children entering foster care nationally surpasses 300,000 each year, underscoring the urgent need for support systems.

To address the financial burdens often faced by foster care alumni, Ohio REACH has launched an emergency fund fundraiser. This initiative aims to help cover critical expenses such as housing and transportation, ensuring that students can focus on their education without additional stressors.

In a related development, the University of Cincinnati has released important research conducted by assistant professor Catelyn Smeyne. This study reveals a troubling nationwide shortage of foster homes, exacerbated by feelings of isolation and a lack of community-driven, trauma-informed training among caregivers. Smeyne emphasized the need for comprehensive policy reforms, stating, “Figuring out how to do that through policy, regulations, better research, better training and better supports…is urgent.”

Ohio REACH’s multifaceted approach not only directly supports students but also tackles the systemic challenges faced by those affected by foster care. By enhancing the existing network of assistance, this program is poised to be a critical factor in the successful transition of foster youth into higher education.

As Ohio REACH continues its mission, the hope is that more foster youth will gain the confidence and resources needed to pursue higher education and beyond. The urgency of these developments calls for immediate attention and action—fostering brighter futures for former foster youth across Ohio.
