Jonathan Van Ness Defends Weight Loss Journey Amid Criticism

Jonathan Van Ness, known for his role on Queer Eye, has responded to backlash following his significant weight loss of 70 pounds, attributed to the medication GLP-1. On October 30, 2023, Van Ness shared his experiences and reasoning behind using the medication in a candid TikTok video. Critics had accused him of abandoning body positivity principles, but he emphasized his commitment to body neutrality, stating, “What do you mean? I’m all about body neutrality.”

In the video, the 38-year-old explained that he had faced a “medical issue” in 2023, prompting his decision to use GLP-1, which is commonly prescribed for diabetes management and weight loss. He expressed that he “just didn’t feel good” prior to starting the treatment, which includes adopting a more active lifestyle with exercises such as Pilates. “My body’s never in my whole life — I’ve always wanted to have an ab,” Van Ness admitted, adding that he now feels more confident and liberated in his body.

In a previous Instagram post from January, Van Ness disclosed that he began using GLP-1, including medications like Ozempic, to help manage a binge eating disorder. He shared before-and-after photos to illustrate his weight loss journey, revealing that he had lost 66 pounds at that time. “Yes, I am on a GLP-1 or a weight-loss medication,” he wrote, highlighting the public nature of his past struggles with fluctuating weight.

Van Ness elaborated on his experience with binge eating, explaining that the disorder had led him to make choices he regretted, leaving him feeling depressed and out of control. After starting the injections in September 2024, he noted an immediate improvement in his well-being. “I, for the first time in my life, have had control over my food intake,” he shared, underscoring the medication’s substantial impact on his life.

He emphasized the importance of seeking help, stating, “I want to be honest with you about it because I know how important asking for help is, and how much asking for help can change your life in terms of healing.”

Van Ness’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding body image, mental health, and the pursuit of well-being. His openness about his journey aims to foster understanding and compassion in discussions about body positivity and health.
