NAMI Yolo County Launches Free Family-to-Family Class in March

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Yolo County is set to launch its Family-to-Family program, a free educational initiative designed for families, significant others, and friends of individuals living with mental illness. The classes will run from March 24, 2024, to May 26, 2024, every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This eight-session course aims to equip participants with vital knowledge and practical skills to support their loved ones. Attendees will engage with others facing similar challenges, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

The curriculum covers a range of essential topics, including effective communication strategies, self-care techniques, and methods to manage crises. According to a press release from NAMI, participants can expect to learn how to:

– Solve problems and communicate effectively.
– Manage stress and care for themselves.
– Support their loved ones with empathy and compassion.
– Identify and utilize local resources and services.
– Navigate the impact of mental health conditions on their families.

The program is taught by trained volunteers who possess personal experience in caring for someone with a mental health condition. This peer-led format enhances the learning environment, allowing for open discussions, shared experiences, and mutual support among participants.

A past attendee shared their experience, stating, “Before I took the course, I felt alone and overwhelmed dealing with my daughter’s mental illness. By taking this course, I have met others who are going through the same things I am and have learned about many resources that I never knew existed.”

Registration for the NAMI Family-to-Family class is required. Interested individuals can sign up online at this link.

This initiative highlights NAMI’s commitment to providing valuable resources and support for families affected by mental health conditions, helping them to navigate their journeys with greater confidence and understanding.
