A recent study has highlighted a concerning trend: individuals are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence for medical advice, despite evidence that these AI systems often deliver inaccurate information. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine, revealing that trust in AI-generated responses surpasses that in traditional medical professionals.
The study involved 300 participants, comprising both medical experts and laypeople, who evaluated responses to medical queries. These responses were generated by three sources: a medical doctor, an online health care platform, and an AI model, such as ChatGPT. Surprisingly, participants rated the AI-generated responses as more accurate, valid, trustworthy, and complete than those from human doctors.
Participants struggled to distinguish between AI-generated advice and that from qualified medical professionals. Notably, even when presented with AI responses that contained low accuracy, individuals perceived these suggestions as valid and indicated a willingness to follow potentially harmful medical advice.
Risks Highlighted by Real-World Cases
The implications of this trend are alarming. The researchers noted that many participants expressed a high likelihood of seeking unnecessary medical attention based on misleading AI-generated advice. For instance, an unidentified 35-year-old Moroccan man was directed by a chatbot to wrap rubber bands around his hemorrhoids, leading to a visit to the emergency room. In another incident, a 60-year-old man ingested sodium bromide, a chemical commonly used in pool sanitation, after receiving advice from ChatGPT, resulting in a three-week hospitalization due to paranoia and hallucinations. This case was documented in a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine Clinical Cases.
Dr. Darren Lebl, research service chief of spine surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, has expressed concerns regarding the reliability of AI medical advice. He noted that a significant portion of the information provided by AI systems lacks scientific backing. “About a quarter of them were made up,” he stated, emphasizing the dangers of misinformation in medical contexts.
Public Trust in AI Medical Guidance
A recent survey conducted by Censuswide further underscores the growing trust in AI. Approximately 40 percent of respondents indicated they would consider medical advice from AI tools like ChatGPT.
