UPDATE: Students at McClure Junior High in Western Springs are celebrating the grand opening of a newly renovated fitness room, funded by a generous $33,700 grant from the Western Springs Foundation of Educational Excellence. The transformation, completed just weeks ago, enhances access to vital strength training and fitness education for nearly 500 students.
The updated fitness space, which opened its doors in August 2023, boasts state-of-the-art equipment and a modern layout designed to support students of all abilities. Dina Castillo, a physical education teacher at McClure, emphasized the renovation’s significance: “These upgrades have turned an outdated room into a functional space for strength training, plyometric exercises, and overall fitness,” she stated.
Renovations began in June 2023 and were finalized two months later, aligning with the school’s physical education curriculum goals. Castillo collaborated with Tori Fankhauser, an instructional coach, to secure the grant, with key support from Principal Laura Broadnax and District 101 Superintendent Sarah Coffey.
“This new fitness room allows us to teach essential skills like lifting and squatting in a safe, supervised environment,” Castillo added. “It’s not just for athletes; it builds confidence and promotes lifelong health for all students.”
Student reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Finnegan Andrew Loughry expressed his excitement, saying, “The new fitness room has really challenged me and made me stronger.” Classmate James Rydberg appreciates the variety of weights available, stating, “I like being able to choose how much I can lift.”
Beyond McClure, the renovated facility serves the wider community, hosting local organizations such as the Celtics Soccer Club and the West Suburban Harriers Running Club. Programs aimed at middle and high school girls, like On Another Level Training, also utilize the space for sports performance and weightlifting.
The Western Springs Foundation of Educational Excellence, an independent nonprofit, continues to play a critical role in enhancing educational opportunities for District 101. Their mission includes acquiring resources and funding innovative projects that extend learning beyond standard curricula.
As McClure Junior High opens its doors to a revitalized fitness experience, the improvements signify a commitment to student health and well-being. The excitement around the new facility is palpable, with students eagerly embracing the chance to develop their fitness skills.
