The GigaBite Robotics team, a community-based group of 11 middle and high school students from South Lake Tahoe, is reaching out for donations to enhance STEM opportunities in the region. As part of the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 20681, the students have made significant strides in promoting hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
This year, the team has successfully mentored a rookie FIRST Lego League (FLL) team, guiding them to earn the prestigious Rising Stars Award and compete at the Northern Nevada Championship. Their efforts also include teaching STEM camps, conducting workshops, and hosting community events that introduce robotics, engineering, and coding to local youth.
Building Skills Through Robotics
Now in their fifth year of competing in the FTC, GigaBite Robotics is focused on fostering real-world skills such as engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving through the principles of Gracious Professionalism. This season’s challenge, titled Decode, has pushed the team to innovate with data-driven designs and custom CAD-built mechanisms, integrating software and hardware seamlessly.
The impact of GigaBite Robotics extends beyond competition. The team has engaged in several initiatives, including mentoring younger teams, supporting FTC teams throughout Nevada and internationally, and volunteering at both FTC and FLL competitions. They have also partnered with local schools and Lake Tahoe Community College to organize STEM Discovery Night, which aims to ignite interest in STEM fields among younger students.
Community Contributions Drive Success
Since its inception, GigaBite Robotics has taught over 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and outreach programs over three summers. The team’s fundraising efforts are crucial for covering necessary expenses such as robot parts, 3D printing filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel costs, and outreach programs. These contributions ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students from exploring STEM opportunities.
Donations to GigaBite Robotics can be made via their official page: https://hcb.hackclub.com/donations/start/gigabite-robotics-team. The team is fiscally sponsored by Hack Club, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with an EIN of 81-2908499.
Support from the community plays an essential role in inspiring curiosity, building confidence, and shaping a stronger future for STEM in South Lake Tahoe. By investing in local students and innovation, donors contribute to developing the next generation of thinkers and creators.
